Fredericksburg man sentenced for Iowa City VA assault
The Gazette
IOWA CITY Randy J. Davidson, 46, of Fredericksburg, was sentenced on Wednesday to 12 months and one day in prison for assaulting a Veterans Affairs police officer in Iowa City last October.
United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker announced Davidsons sentencing for one count of assault with a dangerous weapon within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
United States District Judge John A. Jarvey also ordered Davidson to serve a term of three years of supervised release following incarceration. Davidson was also ordered to pay $100 to the Crime Victim Fund and $180 in restitution, according to a release.
The charge stemmed from an incident on Oct. 13, 2008 at the Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Iowa City. Davison became agitated, threatened staff, and at one point raised a bench over his head. When a Veterans Affairs officer responded, Davidson attacked the officer and struck him with the bench. The officer pushed and pepper sprayed Davidson, who continued to fight. Ultimately, it took four people to subdue and handcuff him, according to a release.
The officer involved was sent to the hospital for treatment and has continued to suffer from pain related to the incident.
The investigation was conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs Police Force.
