Since an Iowa Supreme Court ruling made same-sex marriage legal April 27, 100 same-sex marriage applications have been taken out in Johnson County and 71 in Linn County, according to county recorders.
The data also show nearly 75 percent of the same-sex couples obtaining marriage licenses in the two-county area were women. In about 30 percent of the applications, both partners listed out-of-state residences.
In at least five applications, at least one partner was in his or her 60s. Only about 10 percent of the licenses went to couples younger than 30.
Linn Recorder Joan McCalmant reported a total of 182 marriage-license applications in April, compared with 136 in April 2008. May saw 176 applications altogether, down from 180 in May 2008.
Johnson County Recorder Kim Painter said marriage-license activity more than doubled from 70 in April 2008 to 146 in April 2009. There were 159 licenses filed in May 2009, compared with 127 in May 2008.
The Iowa Department of Public Health will track same-sex and opposite-sex marriages, but the data may be incomplete because applicants now can identify themselves as husband, wife, spouse or no designation.
