Iowa man sentenced for theft from evacuated homes

Associated Press - June 28, 2009 10:34 AM ET

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A Washington, Iowa, man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for stealing guns from homes that had been evacuated during the record floods of 2008.

Twenty-1-year-old Benjamin Willett pleaded guilty earlier in U.S. District Court in Davenport to unlawful possession of firearms.

The U.S. attorney's office says Willett and two other men broke into at least four Coralville homes that had been evacuated and stole at least 25 guns from the homes.

Police searched the men's apartments and found 16 of stolen guns after an undercover officer bought 1 of them from the men.

Both of the other men, Daniel Vieth and Michael Garr, also pleaded guilty. Vieth was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison. Garr has yet to be sentenced.
