There are perhaps few things that seem less innovative and cutting-edge than an old-fashioned corn dog. It's just a hot dog with some batter on a stick, right?
But after a visit to Bar-S Foods processing plants -- where nine robots use photo "eyes" to inspect corn dogs for color, broken sticks, and incorrect sizes or shapes while moving them from a conveyor belt to vacuum-sealed "pockets" -- that impression might change.
Technology investment
Bar-S Foods Co., a Phoenix-based meat processor and distributor, has spent the past couple of years investing in advanced robotics technologies at its three Oklahoma plants and plans to continue, said Chief Financial Officer James Kuykendall.
"Bar-S operates some of the most modern, sanitary and productive meat processing plants and distribution centers in the processed meat industry," Kuykendall said in an e-mail. "We plan to add other robots in inspection packaging and other areas over the next several years."
